After working on over 300 unique sites, we have realized that there are likely 3 easy steps that your website could take to get better SEO performance. After reading this, it should take as little as 5 minutes to make these changes to your Squarespace site.

Want to shortcut menu navigation? Just go to the backend of your Squarespace site and hit the Forward slash (“/”) button on your keyboard. This will bring up a search bar that can save you hours in navigating the backend of Squarespace.

Want to avoid logging into Squarespace altogether? Try going to your website and hitting the “ESC” key on your keyboard. This will cause the site to attempt to bring you into the editor.

This is also a great way to check and see if a site was created using the Squarespace platform, but it will not work for everybody. Using these shortcuts could dramatically speed up your process while implementing the upcoming 3 tips.

Table of Contents in Detail Hide

    1. Site Security Is Key

At the very top of your browser, inside of the address bar, there tends to be either an “HTTP” or an “HTTPS" before the address. For example, you might have an "HTTPS" in front of "Amazon.com" inside of your Browser

Visually, the difference is minimal, but for Google, the difference is huge. That extra “s” at the end essentially means “security.” To avoid shady sites, Google has been programmed to favor websites using “HTTPS.”

Fortunately, inside of Squarespace, doing this is as easy as flipping a switch. Go to the “advanced settings” menu inside of Squarespace and find the SSL menu. Once inside, click “HSTS Secure”. That is it. If there is an issue, be sure to check the “Domains” section on the Squarespace menu.

    2. Speed Up Your Pages

Use AMP. No, this is not the amp for your guitar. In the language of the internet, “AMP” stands for “Accelerated Mobile Pages”. This means that, for mobile devices, certain pages on Squarespace will load faster. Speed is a metric that Google evaluates to help determine ranking.

This Feature will mainly benefit sites using the blogging feature on Squarespace, but it is good to turn on now. Again, this is as easy as flipping a switch. All you need to do is go to the “blogging” section on the Squarespace Menu and scroll down a bit to find “Use AMP.” We wish that we could say this was harder to accomplish for professional reasons, but that is it. 😅

    3. Let Others Speak

Allowing site viewers to add text to your site can be beneficial in the long run. Natively, enabling comments inside of your blog is the only way to give viewers this option. Google can scan the personalized comments and add a viewer’s unique vernacular to that page’s SEO. Want the TLDR version? People commenting on your post can attract more traffic from Google.

While we cannot stress enough how beneficial it can be to have a blog, we have seen far too many without the comment section enabled.

There is an option for posts to “require approval” before going public for those that are worried. To enable the comments section, go to the blogging section inside of the Squarespace Menu. Click on the option that says “Comments Settings” and adjust the options accordingly.

The above tips can help your site improve its SEO, but please do not expect them to put your website at the top of Google.
