12 Upsells For Your Projects As A Squarespace Designer

If you’re wondering how to offer different upsells when you’re designing websites for clients through the Squarespace platform, the following list will provide you with some great ideas.

When I started doing website design as a freelancer, I called one of my best friends for advice right before getting on a call with a potential client.

My friend advised me to upsell a logo. I asked him, “How much should I charge?”

He recommended $500. So I got on the call with the client and, as we discussed pricing and details about the site design services I’d be providing, I threw out this question: “Do you want a logo? You’ll need one for your site.”

He asked me how much. I quoted him $250. “Let’s do it,” he responded.

And just like that, I learned the skill of upselling.

You don’t have to offer everything. You can pick and choose which upsells to offer, sticking to what you’re best at or most comfortable with.

Also, know that as you get better at sales calls, it’ll become easier for you to foresee clients’ problems and offer solutions they can’t resist.

    Consider Offering A Third-Party Service

You can also offer upsells that you hire others to create for you. Whether its content creation, logo design, Squarespace SEO, or something else, you can offer your client the service and then hire it out, turning to a trusted colleague or places like these:

Be Proactive Of What The Client May Need

Just as my friend suggested that my first client as a freelancer might benefit from a logo, your website design clients might need additional services they may or may not be aware of yet.

They reach out to you because they need a website created. That’s the first step. Think about what they might need next.

For example, you can offer a client any of the following, if they’re applicable:

    • Training videos

    • Graphics through Canva

    • Pre-built templates for social media posts

    • Email newsletters

    • Paid ad designs

    • And much more

By anticipating your client’s needs and offering additional services, you’re helping them do their job even better.

    1. Highly Unique Site Customizations

If your client asks for a standard site but you feel they can benefit from specializations that will make them stand out from the competition, offer site customizations as an upsell.

Or they may ask you for five standard pages and a sixth page with unique features that you know will take you much longer to implement. Don’t quote that sixth page at the same price as the standard pages. Any customizations that will take you longer to create should be offered as an upsell.

    2. Setting Up A Scheduler

If you’re going to be setting up a tool like Calendly or Acuity, or any scheduling tool to set up a calendar, there’s a lot of time and effort that goes into this task. Don’t underestimate the complexity of adding in a scheduler. Offer this task as an upsell to make sure you’re compensated accordingly.

    3. Setting Up An Email Newsletter

Another great upsell opportunity for a Squarespace site, an email newsletter also requires extra setup time and effort, so you’ll want to charge accordingly to handle that initial setup for a client.

You may have to integrate with Mailchimp or another tool. You may want to create a template that makes future emailing easier for your client. You can also set up the actual mailing list.

    4. Branding

Always treat branding separate from the site design. If your client doesn’t have their branding in place, and they’re relying on you to come up with colors, fonts, and a logo, you must charge separately for this.

There’s a huge difference between designing a site and using the files and settings provided by the client, and designing a site where you have to create the color and font schemes from scratch. The second option is much more time-consuming, which means you need to charge for branding work as an upsell.

    5. Graphic Designing

If the client wants you to do any types of illustrations using Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch, or a similar tool, you need to offer this as an upsell. It takes very specific skills and tools to do graphic design over and beyond website design.

    6. Copywriting

Creating written content is another specialized skill that you should not be expected to do as a web designer. If your client wants well-written copy throughout the site, you’ll need to charge extra and maybe even hire out a professional writer.

    7. Blog Posts

Writing blogs is a great way to build Squarespace SEO organically over time. This is an extra job and should never be included in your basic design package. Provide separate quotes for blog writing, either per post or per collection of three to five posts.

    8. Search Engine Optimization

SEO can be an ongoing task. There’s always extra SEO work you can be doing to help your client show up better on Google searches. If it’s a brand new site, you can set up their initial SEO for them.

    9. Post-Launch Training

As a designer, your job is to deliver the best Squarespace site design possible. A tech-savvy client can use it as-is, but many clients could benefit from training, which makes a great upsell. Consider offering any of the following:

    • Site overview

    • Recorded Zoom walk-through

    • Site updates

    10. Phone Support

Your client may need additional help after the site hand-off and training. Offer phone or video conference support as an upsell, either per call, or for a specified period for after-sales support, such as 30, 60, or 90 days.

    11: Social Media Graphics

If your client wants to get started on social media posts, you can provide additional upsell support by setting up templates and showing them the ropes.

    12: Social Media Account Creation

Not every client knows how to set up an Instagram account, or Facebook, or Twitter, or LinkedIn. You can offer this service as an upsell and get these social media accounts going for them.
