You’ve finished the redesigned or new page you’ve been working on and now you’re ready to make it live.  If you’re using Squarespace, you’re in luck. We can help you take that masterpiece into the Digi-verse.

The methods in this article assume you have already created a web page and it is in the Non-Linked menu of your web editing dashboard menu. If you need some refresher courses on creating pages on Squarespace, check out these free website tutorials, they’re sure to get you up to speed in no time.

We’re going to walk through some easy ways to make your pages live, and some tips on controlling your pages’ accessibility.

Table of Contents in Detail Hide

    Drag and Drop Method

The first and most straightforward way to make a Not Linked Squarespace SEO page live is to drag it where you want it to appear on your navigation menu.

    • From the back-end of your page navigate to Pages

    • Below your main links there is a Not Linked section, find the page you’ve been working on in that list

    • Click and hold on the name while dragging it up to the Main Navigation menu

    • Drop the page wherever you would like it to appear in the navigation

    Creating a Link Method

The next, and similar way to make a not yet linked Squarespace SEO page live is to add a link in the Navigation menu.  The reason we recommend this method is that it keeps the area around the Navigation Menu clean. It is easy for that area to become overrun with links, folders, and pages, so adding a link gives it a more simplified look.

    • Navigate to Pages

    • Click on the “+” next to the Main Navigation Menu title,

    • Select “Blank Page,” and a pop-up window will appear

    • Type whatever name you want to give the page in the Name field
Pro Tip: Keep in mind this is what will show up on the navigation bar, so try and think of it from a customer perspective when naming your pages.

    • Then type “/” (forward slash) in the Link field and a list of available web pages will appear

    • Choose the page you are trying to make live and click save

Once the page refreshes, you should see that a link to the page is not only up in the Navigation Menu, but also on the Navigation Menu online.

Controlling Squarespace SEO page Accessibility: Hiding a Page from Google Search Results

Let’s say you are working on a page, for a site that is already live. (This is not for those that are not yet live.) It’s a little too soon in the process to make it live to Google search bots, and you don’t want to mess with the SEO from the page. If you just want to work on the page in the background, this is how you get around those pesky search bots.

You are going to just create a new page within the non-linked section.

    • Navigate to Pages

    • Click on the “+” next to the Not Linked menu

    • Click on the option to add a “Blank Page”, then name it whatever you want in the name field

    • Once the page refreshes, click on the page you just created and click on the “Settings” wheel

    • Click on the “SEO” tab and slide the button to “Hide from Search Results”

    • Then click on the “General” tab and slide the enable button to off, this will disable the page

Even though you don’t have to hide the page on the SEO tab and the General tab, this will help you ensure no one has access to the page you’re working on. It makes it inaccessible to the web.

    Once the page is ready:

    • Go back to the not linked menu and click on the “+”

    • then choose “Link,” and a pop-up window will appear

    • In the Link Title field, type in the name of the page

    • In the Link field, type in “/” (forward slash) and again choose the page you are ready to make live

Once you click “save,” you should see the link under the not-linked menu listing. When you are ready to make the page live:

    • Navigate to the Main Navigation Menu

    • Click the settings wheel next to the page you want to make live

    • Select the SEO tab and slide the button back to enable SEO

    • Fill out the information under the tab, then save

    • Select the General tab and slide the button back to “Enable” the page

Now the page is live. To add the link to the navigation, you follow the steps outlined above under the “Drag and Drop Method.”

Now let’s look at a different way to make a Squarespace page live, by adding a linked category in the Navigation Menu.

Linking a Specific Category Directly on Navigation

This part is a little more advanced, but it is super helpful if you want to highlight a specific page on your site right on the Navigation menu. This works well if you have a special discount page, or holiday sale, or something you may want to link to for a time and then take it down.

    • Navigate to Pages

    • Click on the “Shop” tab and it will take you to a listing of your product categories

    • Click on the category you want to link to, and look up to the top of the screen where the URL bar is. Since you are likely logged in, this URL will be your view, not the external view, so you need to find the external link

    • Look for the arrow at the top right-hand side of the screen and click on it, you will see the URL address change (You can also do this by hitting the escape key on your keyboard while on this page)

    • Copy everything after the “.com”

    • Go back to the Main Navigation and hit the “+”

    • Select “Link,” and a pop-up screen will appear,

    • Type in the name of the page in the Link Title field

    • Then paste this copied information into the Link field and click save

This is a great way to highlight specific sections, blog posts, tutorials, or pretty much anything you want to feature on your website.
Now let’s take a look at one more, sneaky, way to make a page live, without adding it to the main navigation.

Making it Live But Not on Main Navigation

If you have a web page that you’d like to make live, but you don’t want to put it on the Main Navigation bar of your page, like a Contact Us page, or an About the Team page, for instance. You can make them accessible, in the footer instead.

    • Navigate to the footer section of your web editor, and click on edit

    • then click Edit the Footer

    • If there are no titles in the footer, create one and then highlight the words.

    • Type CTRL+K on your keyboard to pull up the Hyperlink pop-up menu

    • Again you only need to type in “/” to get the listing of pages

    • Select the page you want it to link to and click apply
